Rough surface with switchable, ultra-hydrophobic property, exhibits greater step change in angle of contact in comparison with that on smooth surface

In this context, switching imports reversible transition to a composite surface, within the meaning of Cassie-Baxter theory (switchable ultra-hydrophobicity). The switching amplitude of the angle of contact is increased relative to the corresponding switching amplitude on a smooth surface. An Independent claim is included for the method of achieving switchable ultra-hydrophobicity, in which a continuous thin film is applied to a rough surface. The film comprises hydrophilic and hydrophobic components. Phase separation enriches them in alternation on the surface.
