PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a linear organosiloxane polymer having a single peak molecular weight distribution, which inhibits the formation of a cyclic oligomer and is simple and cost-advantageous. SOLUTION: The method for producing the linear organosiloxane polymer that has a single peak molecular weight distribution comprises reacting a compound represented by formula (1) (wherein R1is a 1-8C nonsubstituted or substituted monovalent hydrocarbon group or the like which may be the same or different from each other; R2is a 1-8C nonsubstituted or substituted monovalent hydrocarbon group which may be the same or different from one another; and n is an integer of 0-500) with a compound represented by formula (2) (wherein R2is the same as defined above; R3is a 1-8C nonsubstituted or substituted monovalent hydrocarbon group or the like which may be the same or different from one another; and m is an integer of 10-3,000) in the presence of an alkaline compound under the conditions which substantially does not promote the equilibration reaction.
