A MONOLITHICALLY INTEGRATED SOLAR CELL SYSTEM

Contemplated is a monolithically integrated system of silicon solar cells. The system comprises a silicon substrate with a plurality of solar cells formed thereon. Each solar cell comprises emitter and base portions. The system also comprises a plurality of intermediate regions, each intermediate region having a first portion with a polarity that electrically separates at least one of base portions between adjacent solar cells, and emitter portions between adjacent solar cells. Optionally each intermediate region comprises a second portion oppositely polarised to the first portion that electrically separates the other one of base portions between adjacent solar cell, and emitter portions between adjacent solar cells. Furthermore, the first and second portions can electrically interconnect the base portion of one solar cell to the emitter portion of an adjacent solar cell.
