PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a spacer for a TN (twisted nematic) mode liquid crystal display element, which is excellent in wet spraying and with which the liquid crystal display element with high quality display performance is obtainable without having adverse effects such as disorer of arranging of liquid crystal alignment on a liquid crystal and the TN mode liquid crystal display element using the same. SOLUTION: The spacer for the TN mode liquid crystal display element has a 12-22C alkyl group, a 1-6C alkyl group and a substituent expressed by a general formula (1) on the surface. In the formula, R<SP>1</SP>represents hydrogen or a methyl group and m represents an integer of 1-1,000 and m+1 pieces of R<SP>1</SP>s may be optionally identical or different.
