PURPOSE: A method for preparing a modified polyethylene for thermal spray coating and a modified polyethylene prepared by the method are provided, to improve the mechanical strength of thermal spray coating and to enhance the formability and the adhesive strength in preparation of coating by thermal spraying by inhibiting the melt viscosity due to the crosslinking reaction. CONSTITUTION: The method comprises the steps of dissolving polyethylene, 0.1-2 phr of maleic anhydride, 0.01-0.3 phr of benzoyl peroxide, 0.01-0.3 phr of dicumyl peroxide and 0.05-1 phr of dimethylformamide to acetone to prepare a graft reaction mixture; and melt mixing and extruding the mixture at an extrude of a temperature of 100-130 deg.C, to prepare a modified maleic acid-grafted polyethylene. The polyethylene is selected from the group consisting of low density polyethylene, high density polyethylene and linear low density polyethylene. Preferably the reaction is carried out in the presence of 0.01-0.3 phr of an initiator based on 100 parts by weight of polyethylene.
