PURPOSE: An image forming apparatus having optimized pre-heating time and a method for controlling the apparatus are provided to obtain an image with high quality more rapidly. CONSTITUTION: An image forming apparatus having optimized pre-heating time includes an input unit, a light source, a charge-coupled device(22), an A/D converter(82), and a controller(84). The input unit receives a command for executing scanning from a user. The light source emits light to an object. The charge-coupled device photographs an image of the object according to the light emitted from the light source to output an electric signal corresponding to the image. The A/D converter converts the electric signal into a digital signal. The controller controls the light source to emit light to the object when the scanning execution command through the input unit while the light source is turned off. The controller decides whether or not the object is scanned according to the digital signal output from the A/D converter.
