An underpressure is generated inside the inspection area (9) relative to the surrounding environment (28) and this area is connected to a tank (1) so that the pressure in the latter is essentially equal to that in the inspection area. The flow of fluid (30) occurring into the tank from the inspection area in the event of a leak (4) is measured. An Independent claim is also included for the detection device, the tank being provided with a device (23) for generating preferably acoustic vibrations when the fluid flows from the inspection area into the pipe, as well as a sensor (27) for measuring these vibrations.
