<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and system for maintaining an established error count for data transmitted on a WDM optical communication network. <P>SOLUTION: The system obtains a previous interval FEC error count associated with data transmitted on one of a plurality of channels of the network, compares the previous interval FEC error count with a reference error count associated with the channel, adjusts one of a plurality of operational parameters associated with said channel in response to the comparison, and repeats the obtaining, comparing and adjusting steps to adjust each of the plurality of the operational parameters on an automatic periodic basis. Error counts from an FEC code are monitored and operational parameters are automatically adjusted in response to the error counts, thereby achieving system optimization. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO |
