摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To rapidly and automatically select a range where lens driving is ought to be performed in accordance with the results of focus detection computation from among a plural ity of focus detecting regions. SOLUTION: Whether or not the outputs of respective photoelectric conversion means satisfy prescribed conditions or not is decided and whether the outputs of the respective photoelectric conversion means of the next time satisfy prescribed conditions is predicted in accordance with the outputs of the respective photoelectric conversion means. When the outputs of the respective photoelectric conversion means are decided to satisfy the prescribed conditions or are predicted to satisfy the prescribed conditions, the computation of the focusing state of an objective lens is executed in accordance with the output of the respective photoelectric conversion means after the accumulation of the charges of the next time. The focus detection range for focusing of the objective lens is selected from among a plurality of the focus detection ranges in accordance with the results of the focus detection computation. As a result, the shift from the operation to accumulate the charges of a plurality of the destructive read-out type photoelectric conversion means to the operation to compute the focus detection based on the outputs of the photoelectric conversion means is smoothly carried out and as a result thereof, the range where the lens driving is ought to be performed can be rapidly and automatically selected in accordance with the results of the focus detection computation from a plurality of the focus detection ranges.
