PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a mechanism for mounting a panel in a suitable state to the light incident surface of a prism composite. SOLUTION: A liquid crystal panel unit 50R is attached to the light incident surface 22R of the prism composite 22. This unit 50R includes a panel frame plate 51 holding a liquid crystal panel 40R, and a fixation frame plate 54 glued and fixed to the light incident surface 22R. The panel frame plate 51 is fastened to the fixation frame plate 54 by screws through an intermediate frame plate 55. By using wedges 57, the position of the panel frame plate with respect to the light incident surface 22R is adjusted. This allows the liquid crystal panel to be reliably positioned and fixed so that the deviation amount in pixel matching is restrained and focus adjustment is accomplished correctly. Thereby, a further level of accuracy is easily achieved. It is also possible to replace a defective liquid crystal panel and to reduce the size of the prism composite. COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO
