PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a long-life lead acid storage battery improved in starting performance at low cost by preventing short circuit at portions of a separator coming close to edges of a positive plate and a negative plate up to the life of an active material even in a structure in which glass mat is not interposed. SOLUTION: A separator 4 with a rib 3 is interposed between a positive plate 1 and a negative plate 2 without interposing any glass mat. The base thickness d1of a portion of the separator 4 coming close to an edge 1a or 2a of the positive plate 1 or negative plate 2 is made thicker within a range of the overall thickness D of the separator including the height of the rib 3.
