Appliance for cooking food portions which have to be turned over during cooking, especially potato waffles, has at least one inverting system (6a,6b) in a frying pan. It has two cooking surfaces (8a/8b;8c/8d) as rectangular plates, linked together by a hinge along their longitudinal sides to flap over each other. The plates are structured to take the portions to be cooked, with a flat center zone and raised edges in an inverted U-shape. The plates can be turned over and apart by an external handle. The plate hinges (12) have hinge rods (13), connected to a longitudinal profile (15) which is suspended at the leading edge of the frying pan.
