PURPOSE: A system and a method for detecting the failure of an igniter are provided to promptly check the defect in a connector of an igniter or the leakage of secondary voltage by accurately detecting the generation of a check code related to a mis-fire. CONSTITUTION: A failure detector(7) is formed in a specific portion of an ignition plug cable and ignition system(4). If high voltage flows on the center of a round coil of the failure detector, voltage is generated from both ends of the round coil. An ECU(Engine Control Unit,1) compares the generated voltage to a signal of a power transistor(2). If base voltage of the power transistor is different from the detected value of the failure detector, an igniter is decided to have a problem. Then, a specific control signal for lighting on an engine check lamp is outputted.
