PURPOSE: A method and a device for selectively activating keys in a keypad unit are provided to perform selective activation according to modes, or to activate the keys by key grouping, thereby preventing key input error. CONSTITUTION: After keys on a keypad are grouped to form the first group including navigation keys, the second group including game mode keys, and the third group including general mode keys, an MPU(Micro-Processor Unit) checks a mode of a terminal(501). If the checked mode is a game mode, or the second mode(503), the MPU deactivates the keys corresponding to the third group by cutting off voltage supplied to the third group or setting the direction of a pin outputting the voltage to an input of the MPU(505). If the checked mode is not a game mode but a phone/PDA(Personal Digital Assistant) mode, or the first mode(503), the MPU deactivates the keys corresponding to the second group(507).
