PURPOSE: An estimation method for the possibility of slushy coal formation is provided, thereby estimating the slushy coal formation according to physical properties of coal, such as volatile matter content and particle size. CONSTITUTION: An estimation method for the possibility of slushy coal formation comprises the steps of: distributing coal according to its particle size, drying it, collecting a certain amount of a sample, and dipping the sample in a water bath; measuring the average particle size and volatile matter content of the dipped coal; calculating an equation between the average particle size and volatile matter content, and water holding capacity using regression analysis; measuring true threshold water holding capacity value and average particle size, and calculating an equation of the threshold water holding capacity and the average particle size from the above equation; and estimating the slushy coal formation when the calculated water holding capacity is lower than the threshold water holding capacity value.
