PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a data transfer rate discrimination method by which the increase of current consumption can be suppressed and whether or not a data transfer rate discriminated on a receiving side is equal to the transfer rate really transferred from a transmitting side can be discriminated in the case of receiving a data packet, and to provide a circuit therefor. SOLUTION: In the data transfer rate discrimination method, the data transfer rate is identified in the procedures to be performed before the transfer of data and on the basis of a received signal when receiving the data, a receiving clock pulse is reproduced. A reference frequency clock pulse based on the data transfer rate identified by the procedures is compared with the receiving clock pulse and when the data transfer rate identified by the procedures is different from the data transfer rate of the received data, an error report is performed.
