PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a plain electronic dictionary retrieval function by eliminating the complicatedness of selecting a function for retrieving a direction word in an electronic dictionary and a function for retrieving a descriptive text. SOLUTION: This method comprises an information storage part 108 for storing direction words in conformation to descriptive texts; a retrieval condition input process for inputting a retrieval condition expressed by natural words; a retrieval condition analyzing process for determining the words constituting the retrieval condition and each relation between words; a direction word retrieval process for finding out a direction word satisfying the retrieval condition; a descriptive text analyzing process for determining the words constituting the descriptive text and each relation between words; and a descriptive text retrieval process for outputting a descriptive text containing the words of the retrieval condition and entirely matched in each relation between words, or the direction word corresponding to the descriptive text containing part of the words of the retrieval condition and matched in each relation between words.
