PURPOSE: An intake and exhaust valve open/shut apparatus is provided to reduce vibration and noise by using the pressure of exhaust gas for opening/shutting the intake and exhaust valve, while achieving improved engine performance. CONSTITUTION: An intake and exhaust valve open/shut apparatus comprises a branch pipe(8) connected to an exhaust pipe(7); an exhaust gas supply pipe for distributing exhaust gas to the intake and exhaust valves of each cylinder from the branch pipe; the cylinder for receiving exhaust gas from each supply pipe; a valve operating piston reciprocating in a vertical direction within the cylinder, which is fixed at the top of a valve stem of each of intake and exhaust valves; an atmosphere communication pipeline for receiving exhaust gas from the exhaust gas supply pipe and emitting air to the atmosphere during the downward movement of the valve operating piston; supply solenoid valves for opening/shutting each of exhaust gas supply pipes; an exhaust gas return pipeline for connecting each of exhaust gas supply pipes and exhaust pipe, and returning and discharging the exhaust gas supplied during the upward movement of the intake and exhaust valves; return solenoid valves for opening/shutting the exhaust gas return pipeline; a high pressure tank connected to the branch pipe, which supplies compressed air to the cylinder during starting of engine; a tank open/shut solenoid valve(15) for opening/shutting the high pressure tank; and an electronic control unit(19) for controlling operation of solenoid valves.
