PURPOSE: A chain driving unit for an internal combustion engine is provided to decrease stress of all chain driving elements by reducing high power or peak power for a short time with turning and elastically supporting the additional tensioning device through the spring. CONSTITUTION: A chain driving unit for an internal combustion engine comprises a driving wheel(2), a driven wheel(3), an continuously circulating chain(1) that connects the driving wheel and the driven wheel, a chain spanner(9) acting on a empty drum(7) of the chain, and an additional tensioning device(12) that is loaded by a spring(13) and acts on a pull drum(6) of the chain while being arranged for pivoting. A further driven wheel(4) is installed in the pull drum of the chain driving unit, and is used as the driving wheel for a rotatably mounted compensating shaft for offsetting free force and moment that occur during operation of the internal combustion engine. The tensioning device is arranged between the driving wheel and the driven wheel connected to the compensating shaft, and a guide rail is fixed between the first driven wheel and the additional driven wheel connected to the compensating shaft for the chain.
