The method and equipment are for loading and discharge of an inland waterway ship (1) with cargo moved from a quay (2) to the hold (4) of the ship or vice versa and comprising palletized goods, big bars, rolls of paper, packets of timber and similar, the goods being picked up storage point by a first mobile lifting device located in the hold or on the quay. The first lifting device is set down on a support structure (7,8) between the hold and the quay and has a locating surface situated at a level above both the upper side of the hold and the surface of the quay. The cargo is lifted by a further mobile lifting device located on the quay or in the hold, removing it from the support structure and moving it to a desired discharge point.
