PURPOSE: A method and an apparatus for driving a plasma display panel are provided to improve the image quality by controlling total gray number of the present image on the basis of the average brightness of images. CONSTITUTION: A method for driving a plasma display panel includes a process for detecting the average brightness of images and a process for controlling the total gray number. The process for controlling the total gray number is performed to control the total gray number of the present image by using the predetermined reference gray number on the basis of the average brightness of the images. The total gray number of the present image is increased when the average brightness of the images is less than the reference value. In addition, the number of subfields according to the total gray number of the present image is increased when the average brightness of the images is less than the reference value.
