PURPOSE: Provided are a system and method for detecting the application of a sample of biological or control fluid to an electrochemical sensor and initiating the timing of the analyte measurement event. CONSTITUTION: A method for determining the presence of a sample within an electrochemical cell is characterized by comprising the steps of: applying the sample to the electrochemical cell in the absence of an external signal applied to the electrochemical cell; producing a potential difference within the electrochemical cell without applying an external signal to the electrochemical cell; and monitoring the potential difference.
