Method for determining the actual operating or switched-on time of hydraulic, electro-hydraulic or electrical components of a motor vehicle or machine within a reference period or a monitoring time frame. Accordingly the actual switched on time is determined with an approximation procedure. According to the method the monitoring time period is divided into single periods or time windows corresponding to a given number (k) of program or control cycles. Each time window is assigned a value that increases with the instantaneous control time.
