PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for oxidizing carbon monoxide in a gas containing carbon monoxide and hydrogen chloride by using a gas containing oxygen, which is extremely advantageous from the viewpoint of the cost for a catalyst because a catalyst having high catalytic activity is used and carbon monoxide can be oxidized at a lower reaction temperature with a smaller amount of the catalyst. SOLUTION: At least one compound selected from carbon monoxide, phosgene and organic compounds in a gaseous mixture containing hydrogen chloride and at least one compound selected from carbon monoxide, phosgene and organic compounds is subjected to oxidation decomposition by using a gas containing oxygen. The method for oxidizing at least one compound selected from carbon monoxide, phosgene and organic compounds is carried out by using a catalyst obtained by impregnating zirconium oxide calcined at 300°C to 800°C with a ruthenium compound and then heat treating it.
