PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To stretch a glass rod without causing scratch at all. SOLUTION: In a glass rod horizontally stretching apparatus 7 having grasping mechanism parts 2, 3 for mechanically grasping both ends of the glass rod 1, a heating part 4 for heating the glass rod 1 between the grasping mechanism parts 2, 3 and an intermediate supporting mechanism part 6 for supporting the glass rod 5 stretched between the heating part 4 and the grasping mechanism part 3, the intermediate supporting mechanism part 6 has a mechanism for jetting a gas upward, and the stretched glass rod 5 is supported by the jet stream.
