PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projector which gives a bright image of little lift of the black level, good contrast, and an adequate luminance with little in homogeneity. SOLUTION: The projection apparatus is provided with a light source, a light valve which forms the image on a surface having an image display region, and a projection lens which projects light outputted by the light valve, in this order. The projection apparatus is further provided with a shutter means which can form a periodic pattern formed by a light transmitting part and a light nontransmitting part and in which a surface for forming the periodic pattern is arranged on an optical axis between the light source and the light valve so as to be almost orthogonal to the optical axis.
