670,281. Multiple-spindle drilling machines. EAST ANGLIAN ENGINEERING CO., Ltd., and HUTCHINSON, P. March 31, 1950 [March 31, 1949], No. 8801/49. Class 83 (iii). A multiple-spindle drilling machine for buttons or like articles comprises several turret work-holders arranged round a continuously rotatable table and a corresponding number of vertically-fed drill units moving round with the table, each drill unit being in substantially vertical alignment with or slightly offset from the axis of each work-holder. The table 13 and a drill unit platform 34 are rotated on a central shaft 18 by gears 23, 24 and a reduction gearbox 26 driven by a motor 28 and a stationary gear ring 45. Stationary cams 72, 55, 85 and 106 are arranged concentric with the shaft. The six drill spindles 95 are driven by a common belt from a single motor and the drill sleeves 92 are raised and lowered after each indexing of the work-holders by rollers 105 engaging the cam 106; the drill units may be mounted in a slightly inclined position. Each work-holder is indexed by a gear 44 engaging the gear ring 45 and by a friction drive 56 which rotates the spindle 41 after a locking lever 48 is disengaged from a notched disc 47 by the cam 55, the rotation continuing until the lever engages the succeeding notch. Button blanks are fed by hand or automatically to a plate 70 of the work-holder and feed arm 78 on a spindle 75 operated by the cam 85 and a lever 87 sweeps the button into alignment with a holding cup 67 connected to a spring-loaded rod 62 inside the work-holder spindle. The feed arm is then withdrawn and the cam 72 allows the cup to be lowered to grip the button during the drilling operations. After the required number of holes, (four, in the machine illustrated), have been drilled, the holding cup 67 is lifted and a spring-loaded finger pivoted on an arm 79 attached to the spindle 75 is released and sweeps the button into a shoot or into a'partitioned sorting box 110. |
