PURPOSE: An apparatus and method for detecting a film mode are provided to detect the mode of an input video signal using periodicity of a motion vector having high auto-correlation. CONSTITUTION: An apparatus for detecting a film mode includes a motion vector calculator(200), a peak value removing unit(210), a mode detector(220), and a mode confirming unit(230). The motion vector calculator sums up motion vector sizes by fields to output the first calculation value. The peak value removing unit detects a peak value from the first calculation value and removes the peak value from the first calculation value when the peak value is detected. The mode detector compares an auto-correlation coefficient obtain from the signal output from the peak value removing unit and a signal delayed by a predetermined period of time with a predetermined threshold value to output a film mode detection signal. When the mode confirming unit continuously receives the film mode detection signal of more than the first reference value from the mode detector, the mode confirming unit judges it as the film mode.
