PURPOSE: A method for informing of a direction of a portable terminal is provided to output a voice message informing a user that an inputted direction and a current direction are the same, and to output a voice message informing of an error if the two directions are not the same, thereby enabling the user to recognize a self direction without seeing a display. CONSTITUTION: A portable terminal operates a process of inputting a set direction and an alarming time from a user, storing the direction and the time in a memory, and performing a compass function(S1). The portable terminal decides whether a reference time is the alarming time for direction information, and if so, the portable terminal decides whether a current direction outputted from a compass controller is the same as the set direction(S2,S3). If so, the portable terminal outputs a voice message informing the user that the direction is equal through a speaker, and if the direction is not equal, the portable terminal outputs a voice message informing the user that the direction is not the same and an error is generated(S4,S5).
