PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect failure in an EGR system, etc., with effectively utilizing a signal used as control information on an engine. SOLUTION: In a diesel engine equipped with the EGR system, the standard amount of intake air AIRTYP is calculated based on the number of engine revolutions NE and fuel oil consumption Q. Comparing the standard amount of intake air AIRTYP with the actual amount of intake air, when the difference between both is larger than a prescribed valueα, even a problem which could not be detected in the past can be detected exactly by outputting signals alarming an abnormal state.
