PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a discharge lamp lighting device which can rated lights each high pressure discharge lamp respectively according to a kind of each high pressure discharge lamp. SOLUTION: The discharge lamp lighting device is provided with an alternating power source 1, a rectifying circuit 2 which rectifies the alternating current from the alternating power source 1, a power adjusting circuit having a switching element which adjusts power from the rectifying circuit 2, a smoothing circuit 4 which smooths the voltage from the power adjusting circuit, at least one or more inverter circuits 5 having switching elements, which are driven by output power of the smoothing circuit 4, a starting circuit 6 connected to the inverter circuit 5, and a high pressure discharge lamp 7 lighted by the starting circuit 6, wherein the power adjusting circuit comprises a plurality of power adjusting circuits 3a, 3b and 3c which are driven in such a way that the high pressure discharge lamp 7 is turned on at rated lighting by a change over unit 8 selectively according to the installed discharge lamp 7 class which is detected by the change over unit 8.
