A 2-(4-pyridinyl)-benzofuran derivative or an isomer, N-oxide or salt thereof useful as a metalloprotease inhibitor has the formula (I) wherein: R1 is H, halo, alkyl or alkoxy; X is oxygen, sulphur or NR; R is H or alkyl; A is a group of formula (2); Ra is H, alkyl or alkoxy; Rb and Rc is independently H or alkyl and n is 0 to 2.
