The invention relates to a piston-type internal combustion engine with two inlet valves (14, 16) per combustion chamber (12) operated by means of a camshaft, whereby the cams are embodied such that the opening times of the both inlet valves (14,16) are phase-shifted relative to each other. Each of the both inlet valves (24, 26), for one combustion chamber (12), is connected to one of two separate flow paths (24, 26; 24a, 26a). Each of said both flow paths may be closed independently of the other, by means of a closing body (28, 30; 28a, 30a; 64, 66) as an operation mode switch for the duration of an operation mode. Four different operation modes are thus possible: - flow path to the inlet valve (14) open (early inlet), flow path to inlet valve (16) open (late inlet), flow paths to both inlet valves (14, 16) open (early and late inlet), with a) separate early and late inlet with spread cams (valve opening), uninterrupted dynamic inlet with overlapping cams (valve opening). The matching of the charge exchange to requirements is thus possible with relatively little complexity, which is otherwise only possible with rapidly-switching fully-variable valve drive or with pre-valves arranged before the inlet valves. The air mass flow can be increased or reduced and also the combustion air temperature can be increased or reduced. The phase position of the cams is preferably relatively adjustable. |
