The monitoring method has a laser beam directed along the rail track path ahead of a rail vehicle (2), for scanning at least the track width, with evaluation of the reflected component of the laser beam, for detecting an obstacle across the track rails, initiating automatic control of the rail vehicle and/or an alarm signal. An Independent claim for a device for rail track path monitoring is also included.
