PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a color image forming apparatus that securely detects the position of toner even in the case of toner having high reflectance, prevents erroneous detection of a pattern which is caused by a change in the surface of a body to be subjected to transfer or scratch on the surface of the body, detects a reliable amount of color slippage and therefore, forms a color image of high image quality. SOLUTION: At least, out of color slippage detection images in separate colors, the color of reference value setting images (13a, 14a, 15a, and 16a) for the color slippage detection image in a color having the lowest light reflectance is made different from the color of reference value setting images (13b, 14b, 15b, and 16b) for the color slippage detection images in the other colors.
