PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the efficiency of the assembly work with an engine, and to improve the aligning accuracy of a drive shaft to a control shaft by unitizing components of a variable control device. SOLUTION: A variable valve system has the control shaft 5 which is disposed substantially parallel to the drive shaft 3 with a control cam provided thereon, a working mechanism 7 to control the operation of an intake valve by the turn of the control cam, and a supporting mechanism 9 in which the working mechanism or the like is provided on a cylinder head 1. The supporting mechanism comprises a supporting body 13 which is provided on an upper end face 1a of the cylinder head and has a support groove to bear a lower part of the drive shaft on an upper surface, a main bracket 14 having a support groove to bear the lower part of the control shaft jointly with the support groove of the supporting body on a lower surface and having a bearing groove to bear the lower part of the control shaft on an upper surface, and a sub bracket 15 having a bearing groove to bear the control shaft jointly with the bearing groove of the main bracket on a lower surface, and the drive shaft, the control shaft and the working mechanism are bolted to each other into an integrated unit.
