PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize space saving by increasing the degree of freedom in terms of layout in winding the belt type intermediate transfer body of an image forming apparatus. SOLUTION: The intermediate transfer belt 33 of an intermediate transfer unit 32 is stretched and laid on a driving roller 36, a transfer counter roller 37, a cleaning counter roller 38, a separation roller 39, a reverse bending roller 40, a tightener 41 and a driven roller group 42, and its surface side on which a toner image is held is pressed by the roller 40 so that it is bent in a reverse direction, whereby unit constitution is miniaturized. A roller excellent in releasing property is used as the roller 40 so that toner may not be transferred or a roller made of conductive material is used as the roller 40 so that the toner may not be transferred, because bias having the same polarity as the toner is applied.
