An allylic halide is used in a process for polymerizing an unsaturated hydrocarbon monomer using a catalyst based on an aluminum halide. An Independent claim is also included for the production of a resin suitable for use as a tackifier by polymerizing a mixture of unsaturated hydrocarbon monomers with 4-18 carbon atoms in the presence of an aluminum halide and an allylic halide.
