The method involves comparing the signals from two motion sensors arranged symmetrically with respect to the vehicle's longitudinal axis so that their time relation is correctly preserved and deriving and indication regarding the orientation and/or type of an obstruction from the result of the comparison. The change in speed of the relevant sensor location can be derived from the sensor signals.
