A road surface (1) is traversed by a normal road vehicle, attached to which is a support (3) protruding some two meters over the road surface. The support has a scanner (4) with a laser-emitting transmitter (4.1) and a laser receiver (4.2). The transmitter is aligned to the road surface in a moving surface plane (9). A signal picked up from the laser receiver sets the time between generating a pulsed laser beam and receiving the beam after it is reflected from the road surface.
