The support and reinforcing element consists of a dowel (6) inserted into a hole (5) drilled in the masonry (M) in line with the gap between two rows of facing panels (1, 1'), a backing plate (10) which is inserted horizontally through the gap and swings into a vertical position behind the facing panels, and a spacer plate (8) which maintains the gap between panels. A bolt (12) screws into a threaded hole (7) in the dowel to hold the backing and spacer plates in place, and a covering strip (13) or decorative button to conceal the bolt head is attached to a clip (14) on the bolt. The plates and covering strip are coated with a synthetic foam layer (15) to prevent damage to the facing panels. A variant of the design has two spring-loaded cylinders fastened to the dowel by a bolt and fitted with back and front plates.
