PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a composition of a catalyst and a solvent, and a catalytic method using this composition. SOLUTION: The catalyst composition includes at least one Broensted acid of the formula HB dissolved in a nonaqueous liquid medium of the formula Q<+> A<-> (where Q<+> is an organic cation and A<-> is an anion) having an ionic property. When A and B in the composition have the same chemical property, the molar ratio of the Broensted acid to the ionic liquid is below 1/1.
