PURPOSE: An external electrode fluorescent lamp is provided to prevent electrode losses and blackening, while lengthening the useful life of the lamp by minimizing sputtering. CONSTITUTION: An external electrode fluorescent lamp comprises a glass tube(10) encapsulated with a discharge gas, and which has an inner surface coated with a phosphor(20). An electrode region is formed at the outer surface of the glass tube around both ends of the glass tube. The phosphor has an end opposed to the end of the electrode region, and the end of the phosphor and the end of the electrode region are disposed in a single line in a vertical direction.
