PURPOSE: A method for preparing diacetal is provided, to produce diacetal with a high purity and a high production yield by the condensation reaction of an aromatic aldehyde and a polyol. CONSTITUTION: The method comprises the step of condensation reacting an aromatic aldehyde and a polyol of C5-C6 in the presence of an acid catalyst and sodium lauryl sulfate as a surfactant in a hydrophobic organic solvent. Preferably the hydrophobic organic solvent is cyclohexane or toluene; the acid catalyst is sulfonic acid or phosphonic acid; the aromatic aldehyde is at least one benzaldehyde represented by the formula 1, wherein R is an alkyl group or a halogen atom, and n is an integer of 0-5; and the polyol is xylitol or sorbitol. More preferably the acid catalyst is p-toluenesulfonic acid; and the benzaldehyde is at least one selected from the group consisting of p-methylbenzaldehyde, p-ethylbenzaldehyde, 2,4-dimethylbenzaldehyde, 3,4-dimethylbenzaldehyde and 2,4,5-trimethylbenzaldehyde.
