PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a character input device capable of analyzing a character by a little information quantity on a handwriting character, and capable of speeding up processing. SOLUTION: A character code of the character regarded as being written is extracted on the basis of the two-dimensional moving direction c of a pen point detected in time series on the basis of a vertical and horizontal directional movement of the pen point on a writing surface at character writing time. Thus, since the character can be analyzed by the little information quantity of only storing the two-dimensional moving direction of the pen point in time series, the processing can be sped up. Since there is no need to particularly arrange a prescribed wiring surface and a writing range is not fixed, portability similar to a pen is imparted, and carriability is improved so that convenience in use can be improved.
