The method involves using a tobacco industry device with a strand suction conveyor (4) for forming a tobacco strand (12) and a fan (22) supplying the strand suction conveyor with a vacuum and using the fan for at least one other purpose while the strand suction conveyor is idle. The fan can be used for at least partially sucking up short pieces of tobacco. Independent claims are also included for the following: an arrangement for manufacturing cigarettes and the use of a fan for producing a vacuum for a strand suction conveyor in a cigarette manufacturing machine to suck small tobacco pieces from the machine or an adjacent machine while the strand suction conveyor is idle.
