The invention relates to a method for the treatment of effluent, sludge or organic substrates used in biogas plants, containing filaceous and flocculating micro-organisms for the reduction and avoidance of the formation of bulking sludge, floating sludge and/or foam, whereby the effluent sludge or organic substrate is led into a flow channel (3) and a shear stress applied in the flow channel which is adequate to reduce the relative ratio of the number of filaceous micro-organisms relative to the number of flocculating micro-organisms. The invention further relates to a device for carrying out the method.
