A rotary evaporator has a membrane pump connected to the outlet of a condenser on the suction side and to a condensate collecting vessel on the pressure side, and a rinsing air feed. A rotary evaporator comprises an evaporator flask (3) for a product to be evaporated; a heating bath (8) for heating the flask and the product; a motor (7) for rotating the flask in the bath; a condenser (4) for condensing the distillate into a condensate; a vacuum device for producing a vacuum in the flask and condenser; a feed unit for automatically introducing the product into the flask; a removal device for automatically removing condensate; and a process computer (10) for regulating and controlling the running of the distillation, the product feed and the condensate removal. The evaporator further comprises a membrane pump (14) connected to the outlet of the condenser on the suction side and to a condensate collecting vessel (6) on the pressure side; and a rinsing air feed (16) which can be switched using a control valve (17). The pump acts as the vacuum device. Preferred Features: The control valve opens when the suction power of the pump decreases as a result of the condensate. The low pressure prevailing in the flask and in the condenser thermodynamically matches the evaporation pressure and/or boiling point of the product.
