PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a braking device for a sliding member miniaturizing the size and reducing the cost, and to provide a measuring instrument using the same, miniaturizing the size, and reducing the cost. SOLUTION: This braking device for an X-axis spindle 12 includes a guide means vertically liftably guiding the Z-axis spindle 12. The guide means is provided with a guide frame 22 formed in such a state as clamping the outside surface of the Z-axis spindle 12 and an air pad 24 disposed in the guide frame 22 in such a state as clamping the outside surface of the Z-axis spindle 12 and injecting an air to the outside surfaces. When the air is injected to the outside surface opposite to the Z-axis spindle 12, a clearance is formed between the air pad 24 and the outside surface of the Z-axis spindle 12. This device is also provided with a preload applying means applying preload to the air pad 24 so that the air pad 24 pushes the outside surface of the Z-axis spindle 12, when the air from the air pad 24 is cut off.
