PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for industrially and advantageously producing a biodegradable high molecular weight aliphatic polyester in which an alkoxy-1,2-propanediol can be copolymerized without lowering of the molecular weight, having high stress at rupture and elongation at break and excellent in processability. SOLUTION: This method for producing the aliphatic polyester comprises carrying out condensation reaction of an 3-alkoxy-1,2-propanediol represented by the general formula (wherein R<3> is a 1-18 C aliphatic group) with an aliphatic carboxylic acid and an aliphatic glycol.
